In memoriam former President Paul Smith

Former President Paul Smith and family

Handball Australia is saddened by the death of Paul Smith in late November, following illness, and we pay tribute to his contribution to our sport.

Paul dedicated his time to Handball from 2008, initially as a Director, beginning his time with Handball while his sons played, and then as our President between 2009 and 2013. During this time our Committees were established and Paul was influential to our development in governance. He was also a President of the OCHF before its reformation in 2014.

Paul led Australia’s first participation in Beach Handball in 2010, with his sons Nathaniel and Blair playing. Beach Handball then became a formal discipline in Australia in 2011, with the IHF sending coaching and officiating lecturers to our training camp on the Gold Coast.

While working as a judge in the Queensland Land Court, Paul worked tirelessly during this time for Handball, with the contribution and support of his wife Debra and sons Nathaniel, Blair and Jason. We extend our sincere condolences to Debra the boys and their families and thank them for sharing Paul with us.
