Aussie Beach teams learn of shock ANOC World Beach Games cancellation

Handball Australia learnt overnight that the ANOC 2nd World Beach Games scheduled for Bali in one month’s time had been cancelled, following the Indonesian Olympic Committee’s withdrawal of it’s commitment to host. According to ANOC the budget for the event was not released by the government and the short lead time made it impossible to find a new host.

We share the extreme disappointment expressed by the respective bodies; ANOC, IHF and the Australian Olympic Committee and feel for our selected athletes who have been denied an opportunity to compete at an International Event culminating from their hard work, dedication and commitment they have shown in qualifying to represent Oceania and their country in their chosen sport.

Handball Australia congratulates the members of our Men’s and Women’s teams who were selected for this event and extend our appreciation to them for their sacrifices in attending the training camps and undertaking their fitness programs, which they have combined with their employment and family commitments, to represent Oceania at this level.

Selections and opportunities at this level come around in cycles and subject to performance, health and availability. These athletes made the most to be selected from the training squads for this tournament.

We thank the coaches of both teams for their efforts in preparing for the event.
