University of Queensland defeated University of South Australia 34:14 (15:8) in the opening game of the National Club Championship for men, in Gold Coast today.

The match seemed evenly matched for about 10 minutes with both teams trading goals, but a five-goal spree by UQ’s Ignacio Ballester, midway through the first-half, put UQ in a commanding lead.

From then on, UQ dominated till the end to take the first two points of the competition.

St Kilda HC : Brisbane HC 21:18 (9:10)

In the game that followed, Saint Kilda had a more difficult time in their 21:18 (9:10) win against Brisbane HC.

Brisbane spurred on by an excellent performance from goalkeeper Alex Lynch, had a two-goal lead at the 40-minute mark but stumbled and allowed St Kilda back in the game.

The teams then went goal-for goal for most of the second half before St Kilda stepped-up a notch, taking the comfortable win.

For St Kilda, national team pivot Karl Warrener scored eight goals, while former national team left-back Sasa Sestic added 6. Sestic, who represented Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games returned to competitive handball last  month and quickly demonstrated why he is regarded as one of Australia’s great players.
