National Club Championships return in Gold Coast

The National Club Championship will return to action in Gold Coast next weekend, for the first time in two years, after national competitions were halted following the Covid-19 outbreak. Though not without late changes in match schedules.

Melbourne’s top men’s handball club, St Kilda withdrew from competition yesterday, after the Queensland government extended travel restrictions to Victorians following new cases of covid infections in Melbourne. St Kilda was expected to be Sydney University’s top contender for the title, but that task now falls on the University of Queensland Handball Club. Sydney University is aiming for their ninth consecutive national title.

The women’s division will have a new champion after University of Queensland did not nominate a team for this year’s tournament. The club that represented Oceania at the last IHF Super Globe in 2019 was unable to regroup after the long break from competition.

Teams from Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Adelaide will compete for national titles in the men’s and women’s divisions

A full fixture of matches will be published in the following days.

What he should have said was: ‘bring your gear’!
