Australian youth beach teams compete in first youth world championship

In their first World Championship appearance, the Aussie Junior Men finish in Top Ten at tenth place and the Women 13th at the IHF U17 Beach Handball World Games in Mauritius between July 11-16.

On their way through the Pools round, the Men won against New Zealand 2:0. Powerhouse Portugal and eventual silver medallists Italy were in the same Pool and the Australian Men kept them both to within 5 goals in their first halves. Placing third in the pool, Australia continued to the main rounds with wins against Togo 2:0 and Paraguay 2:1 but couldn’t quite catch Pakistan in their final match. Australian player Ben Turner placed the fifth highest scorer overall.

The Women had a win against America Samoa 2:0 in their pool round, also against Mauritius in the placement rounds 2:0. They then faced American Samoa in the final ranking round but this time our Oceania colleagues were the winners in a very close penalty shoot-out finish 2:1 (9:10) (12 : 7) (5 : 4 E). Australian player Stella Sevilla was the third top scorer in the Women’s event.

The Men being the top placing Oceania team fulfil the next step in the pathway to Youth Olympic Game’s repetition. The AOC have a shortlist of three sports which need to qualify through their respective pathways and the AOC will select one Men’s team sport to attend the 2018 YOG.
