Sydney University Handball Club held-off a late challenge from Qatari club, Al Sadd, to claim their first victory at the IHF Super Globe, winning by a single goal 21:20, last night in Doha.
Sydney University’s win comes after four appearances at the prestigious international event that brings together all continental club champions.
The Aussies went goal-for-goal with the Asian champions but only hit the front at the 43rd minute mark through a goal by Renato Rui. Then, a three-goal brace by Spanish national and club veteran, Diego Llorente, gave Sydney a two-goal lead, in the final stages of the game.
Sydney Uni then fought hard to keep their lead as the home team increased the pressure to avoid their first loss to the Aussies. The effort was to no avail though, the Aussies holding on to record a historic victory for the club and Australia.
Sydney Uni will now meet with Hungarian super-club MKB-MVM Veszprém, in the semi-final of the tournament, guaranteeing the club a top-four finish.
