Victoria, New South Wales and Wellington (NZ) come out on top at Beach titles

The finals and placement series for the 2017 Australian Open Club Beach Handball Championships recently were as tightly contested as the preliminary rounds, with several of the games going to penalties.

The Women’s final came down to two former rivals RUOK? (QLD) and the Maroubra Bluebottles (NSW) playing again this year and with the final 1 set each at the end of regular lay playing time. In the end specific Beach Handball experience with taking penalties showed through, with Maroubra looking more comfortable with the shootout situation, and taking the title in a very exciting and close contest.

As with the Women’s event, the men’s event between the Easter Melbourne Spartans (VIC), seeking to regain their title, and the Maroubra Bluebottle Men (NSW) again came down to penalties, this time with the Spartans cementing their lead and reclaiming the title.

The Mixed Beach event is a very popular category in Australia and building well as a concept, given the non-contact nature of the discipline, though still very competitive nature. The Maroubra Bluebottles (who featured in all 3 finals) played the Wellington (NZ) Parrots. Both teams had several of their national team level players. The NZ keeper had an awesome match and the Parrots capitalised in a tightly contested match to take the title home across the Tasman.

This year the mix of our regularly strong teams and with new (and returning) competitors edging closer and pushing hard has shown exciting promise for Australian development and we look forward to seeing what surprises are in store in coming years.
