Turramurra High School of Sydney claimed both boys’ and girls’ title in the finals of the inaugural Australian National Schools Championships on Friday at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
The girls’ final was a thrilling affair right down to the last minute. Turramurra snatched the win from Canberra’s Narrabundah College, in the last minute of the game to win by 9:8. With only ten minutes remaining on the clock, Turramurra had been trailing by 7:4. The team from Sydney then went on a 5:1 scoring spree to ensure the championship title with seconds on the clock.
Turramurra also started strongly in the boys’ final to take a 7:1 lead, again over Narrabundah College. Narrabundah College clawed back to then stay within range for most of the match until Turramurra then pulled away to continue to build and take the final 25:13.
The inaugural event ran over three days from Wednesday August 31 until Friday September. Representative schools from Victoria (Cheltenham Secondary College), NSW (Turramurra High School) and ACT (Narrabundah College and Canberra Combined Schools) took part.
We congratulate the schools, teams and staff on their development with handball, progress over the tournament and thank them for participating with us in establishing the event as we grow it into the future.
